Broken heart (also known as a heartbreak or heartache) is a term metaphor for the intense emotional—and sometimes physical—stress or pain one feels at experiencing great longing. The concept is cross-cultural, often cited with reference to a desired or lost lover, and dates back at least 3,000 years.[1]

Emotional pain that is severe can cause ‘broken heart syndrome‘, including physical damage to the heart. (This is where I got this definition)

That description works. It makes sense. If broadly used. There are so many types of broken hearts. And in your life time I hope you can experience them all. Hear me out!

There is the broken heart of betrayal – from a friend or a loved one or a lover. Perhaps a mentor or a boss figure. Betrayal hurts no matter what the source. If betrayal breaks your heart – just remember to be gentle with yourself. Go through it, not around it. Revisit your soul. You probably let that go a little while you were giving yourself, all of yourself, to someone else. Find that again. Light the fire. Be true, be life. That is going to be a harder task if you are constantly questioning the reason this betrayal happened. Don’t ask questions. Usually they are the wrong ones. Usually they just cause more pain. Go through it, but don’t investigate every last detail. Feel the feels, have the emotions. But go through it.

There is the type of broken heart you will get when you get terrifying news. Be it your own or your loved ones. Bad news doesn’t typically come with a warning, there aren’t usually signs. Your heart can break if you are left, abandoned. If you are overlooked. Everyone else is getting the one thing you desire be it pregnancy or promotions. Whatever you desire, if will be hard on the heart, if it seems that everyone around you is getting it and you aren’t. Death. That one obviously needs to explanation of why that breaks your heart. That meagre list literally just scratches the surface of what will break your heart in your lifetime.

Okay, so it might seem a little heartless to tell you that I hope you experience all the broken hearts in your life. But its in the darkest nights that the stars shine their brightest.

A broken heart will make you brave. When it feels like you have nothing left, being strong, being brave will be what gets one foot in front of the other. A broken heart doesn’t make the world stop turning, no matter how hard you wish for it. Something horrible happened. And you survived. There isn’t infinite time in your life, the days are limited. Be brave, forge ahead.

It will make you wise. When your heart breaks you will learn things about yourself you didn’t know before. You will learn about things you desire. Paths you want to take. Goals you want to achieve. You will learn what it means to get back up. A broken heart doesn’t feel good, no one argues that, but getting to know yourself better than you did before…that feels good.

That broken heart will also fill you with confidence and gratitude. You will look back one day and be grateful for the amazing moments. It will also give you confidence, because once you have had that, and moved on, and overcome it, well the confidence you will feel from that growth is unsurmountable.

A broken heart, with all its lessons, also holds a great value in the fact that to have a broken heart means you have loved. Love means you felt like you could fly. Flying is pretty cool. And love, love is what makes the world go round.

So. Love. Just love. Love fiercely. Love always. Fall in love. Fall out of love. Stay in love. Love to the moon and back. Love just a little. Love a lot. Theres room in this world for all the love, all the time. Love.
